Denis Losier

After attending school in Tracadie, Mr. Losier obtained a B.A. in 1973 and a B.Sc. in social science (economics) in 1974 from the Université de Moncton. He then continued his studies at the University of Western Ontario, where he earned a Master’s degree in economics in 1975.
He began his career in economics when he accepted a position with the former federal Department of Regional Industrial Expansion. He then became executive director and president of the Société des Acadiens du Nouveau-Brunswick. From 1984 through 1986, he was First Secretary of Industrial Co-operation at the Canadian embassy in Paris. He returned to Canada to serve as Director General of the Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick Inc. and in June 1988 was named Deputy Commissioner of Economic Development in Premier Frank McKenna's Cabinet.
On November 14, 1988, Mr. Losier was elected Liberal MLA for the riding of Tracadie, a position he won for a second term in September of 1991.
On June 15, 1989, Mr. Losier was named Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. In October of 1991, he was named Minister of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. Mr. Losier sat on the Cabinet Policies and Priorities Committee and the Budget Committee, and acted as co-chair of the Committee on Internal Trade, a joint federal/provincial/territorial committee.
Named President and CEO of Assumption Life in Moncton on September 1, 1994, Mr. Losier is also president of Assumption Life's real estate subsidiaries and of Louisbourg Investments.
Mr. Losier has received many recognitions and awards over the course of his exceptional career, including an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from the Université de Moncton (2003) and the "Prix Montfort" (2004). The prestigious Montford award recognizes Francophones for their excellence in their field and their contribution to the enhancement of French culture in Canada and abroad.
Mr. Losier is a member of the board of well-known public companies such as Canadian National, NAV Canada, Enbridge Gas NB, PlazaCorp Retail Property Ltd., as well as several associations and groups, namely, Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association. Mr. Losier was also co-chair of the Université de Moncton Excellence Campaign and chair of the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute’s Discoveries Campaign. In 2008, Mr. Losier was appointed member of the Security and Intelligence Review Committee of Canada and, in that capacity, became a member of the Privy Council.
