Breast cancer research

Our Commitment

Assumption Life is playing an active role in the fight against breast cancer. In 2001, the company made a commitment to helping the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute in its research on breast cancer. Assumption Life strongly believes that this kind of partnership has great chances of improving the health of women in general and the quality of life of those affected by breast cancer.

Over half a million dollars to the Institute

Altogether, Assumption Life and its business centres have raised almost $780,000 for the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute through its fundraisers over the past nine years.

The research that we are supporting

This research is being carried out under the supervision of Dr. Rodney Ouellette, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute. The Institut was founded in 1998. Among the research being conducted there, the project on breast cancer is without a doubt one of the most promising.

The research team is focusing its efforts on finding ways to screen for and treat this illness more effectively. One of the lines of research being investigated is genetic screening for breast cancer. Previous research found that certain groups of women are at higher risk for breast cancer. This discovery, which has already been of benefit to our communities, has made it possible to follow the women in these groups more closely.

The new research project at the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute will use biotechnology and genetic engineering tools that will make it possible to target cancer cells more effectively. The goal of this technology is to kill the individual cancer cells by deactivating some of the genes that they need to survive. By "deprogramming" cancer cells in this way, the tumor can be destroyed on the cellular level.
